Closing the Loop: Saeplast and Ocean Legacy Advance Circularity in Plastic Use

Closing the Loop: Saeplast and Ocean Legacy Advance Circularity in Plastic Use

In an era where sustainability is no longer optional, Saeplast and Ocean Legacy have joined forces to create a powerful partnership rooted in environmental responsibility and innovation. Together, they are turning old, end-of-life plastic polyethylene containers into new products—ushering in a new age of circularity in material handling.

A Shared Mission for a Cleaner Future

Ocean Legacy Foundation (OLF), a Canadian non-profit, is recognized globally for its leadership in marine plastic cleanup, recycling innovation, and advocacy. Operating the only Marine Debris Recycling Facility in North America, OLF has developed one of the largest ocean plastic recycling programs in the world. Their pioneering work has prevented millions of pounds of plastic from polluting our oceans, transforming waste into a valuable resource known as Legacy Plastic.

Saeplast, a division of Rotovia and a global leader in rotationally molded containers, shares a commitment to responsible manufacturing and sustainability. With core values of Care, Share, and Can Do, Saeplast is taking bold steps to reduce waste and close the loop on plastic usage in the industries it serves.

From Waste to Resource: The Circular Process

The collaboration works like this:

  1. Collection – Saeplast customers return their used, 10–15 year-old polyethylene (PE) and polyurethane (PU) containers to Ocean Legacy.

  1. Recycling – Ocean Legacy processes the old containers at their marine debris facility, breaking them down into raw PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastic pellets.

  1. Reintegration – Saeplast takes the recycled pellets and reintegrates them into the manufacturing of second-generation PE containers, giving new life to materials that have already served a full industrial cycle.

This circular model is the first of its kind in North America, making tangible progress toward waste-free operations and sustainable production practices.

The Power of Partnership

This partnership is not just about recycling containers—it’s about creating a systematic solution to plastic waste. Through collaboration, both organizations are proving that it’s possible to:

  • Reduce plastic pollution from marine and industrial sources

  • Repurpose materials that would otherwise be landfill-bound

  • Lower the environmental impact of manufacturing

  • Extend the lifecycle of industrial products

By reclaiming and recycling used containers from both marine and land-based food operations, Saeplast and Ocean Legacy are demonstrating the versatility and broad impact of this sustainability initiative.

Looking Ahead

Saeplast’s partnership with Ocean Legacy has already made a significant impact, and both organizations are committed to growing the program further. Saeplast is actively working to increase the proportion of PCR content in its containers and expand the recycling initiative to more regions and customers.

As Saeplast continues to innovate in material handling, and Ocean Legacy continues to lead in recycling and environmental restoration, their collaboration stands as a model of what’s possible when shared values lead to bold, sustainable action.

Together, we’re not just recycling containers—we’re building a cleaner, more responsible future.

West Liberty Foods was the very first Saeplast customer to utilize Ocean Legacy recycled PCR content in the core of their containers thus achieving another milestone in West Liberty Foods sustainability initiatives.
