San Carlos Goes Higher with Saeplast to Enhance Cold Chain of Quality Shrimp

The shrimp processor, San Carlos, is in Choluteca, Southern Honduras and is the processing plant of three large shrimp companies in Honduras - Cacesa, Coexmar and Mer Seafood. Their main objective is to process the highest quality shrimp possible for their export markets. To maximize freshness of their shrimp and to ensure excellence throughout the process, they rely on suppliers that offer premium sustainable packaging solutions – suppliers like Saeplast.

Maximize Freshness with a Built to Last Design

San Carlos had a challenge where they transport live shrimp from the farms to the processing plant and require tight temperature control. They needed a shrimp transport bin that would maximum the survival and safety of their live shrimp. Maintaining the appropriate temperature and the correct oxygen level are critical to the survival and quality of the live shrimp to the processing plant.

After many discovery discussions and mapping the supply chain with Saeplast’s representative, Licesio Fernández Tejedor, a potential solution was devised.

Saeplast was able to develop a long lasting and durable solution using the Saeplast DX335 bin. The one-piece durable triple wall design of the DX335 maximizes high insulation factor. The superior quality of the PUR insulation allows for a constant low temperature to be realized during the transport from the harvesting site to the processing plant. Thus, keeping the shrimp alive with reduced stress levels; therefore enhancing the processing quality of San Carlos’ shrimp.

Secondly, to ensure the proper oxygen levels throughout the bin, Saeplast was able to customize their lid offering to allow for an oxygen line to easily pass through the lid of the container into the bin without having to remove the cover.

A third bonus for San Carlos was that Saeplast offers assorted colors and labeling options to allow San Carlos to brand their bins for different uses. San Carlos uses blue bins for harvest and then green bins for within the processing plant.

The ability to label the bins with names and sequential numbering assists San Carlos in their traceability initiatives. In Honduras, San Carlos not only works with its associated farms, but can manufacture products from other farms and groups, which is why identification of the bins by color, and different lettering and numbering are essential. The bins are easily identifiable which assists in a smooth transition through San Carlos’ supply chain. From harvest to the final product, San Carlos shrimp is easily identifiable.
